The history of Lavazza
Lavazza coffee has been part of Italian coffee culture for more than 100 years. The company remains family-owned and managed by the Lavazza family.
The story of Lavazza began in 1894, when Luigi Lavazza purchased a small grocery shop in Paissa Olivero, an old district of Turin, and started his own business. This small shop became the starting point for what would eventually grow into the Lavazza company we know today.
The company was officially established in 1895, just one year after Luigi opened his shop. At the time, Luigi was at the head of the business. The small grocery store earned no more than around 1,300 lire a week and sold almost everything from everyday goods to various household products. Deliveries were also made directly to customers' homes, and on occasion the shop even served as a kind of informal meeting place.
It was during these early years that Luigi Lavazza roasted his first coffee and began developing the ideas and processes that would later help shape the company's long coffee-making tradition.
